2025 Goals

2025 is here and it is time to set my hobby goals for the year! Last year I split my goals into painting, playing, and buying. This year I am combining the painting and buying goals together into a single goal of reducing my unpainted models. 

Goal #1: Reduce Unpainted Miniatures (The Pile of Shame)

Last year, I was able to reduce my pile of shame by 58 miniatures. This was the total result of (Models Painted + Models Sold - Models Bought). This year my goal is to reduce my pile of shame by 60 miniatures. While this is close to what I did last year, this year will be a bit more difficult, because I don't have many miniatures that I am looking to sell. So the reduction in unpainted models is going to have to come almost entirely from painting. 

If I purchase no new models, then the goal should be easy! 60 painted models is just over half of what I was able to paint last year. Unfortunately, I already have ideas of purchases I want to make, so this seems unlikely. If I purchase 50 new miniatures, then I will have to paint 110 miniatures, which is almost exactly what I painted last year. If I want to purchase more than 50 miniatures this year, then I am going to have to increase my rate of painting to accommodate this. 

I like this goal better than last year's because last year my purchasing goal was a bit nebulous. This year I will be better able to judge whether or not I am successful, and track my progress throughout the year. 

Goal #2: Play Games With My Painted Miniatures

I will be keeping the exact same goal as last year: 24 games. This goal felt right. I never felt like I was forcing myself to get games in just to meet the goal, and I also never felt like I wasn't playing enough. I think that 2 games per month on average is perfect. Obviously some months will be more and some will be less, but I think that this year I can meet the goal. For me, one of the most satisfying things is playing a miniature wargame where all the players have fully painted miniatures, and the terrain is also finished. I look forward to using my painted miniatures for a variety of games again this year!

Mini-Goal #1: January and February

With those two big goals, I am going to be setting smaller goals as I progress throughout the year. These goals will keep me focused on my current projects. For January and February this year, I want to finish my last remaining retro sci-fi figures that I had bought for Stargrave, and last miniatures I had bought for Frostgrave: Ghost Archipelago.

There are 16 total figures I have in mind for this: 10 Sci-Fi and 6 Fantasy. Having a mix of the Sci-Fi and Fantasy miniatures will give me some painting variety, and painting 8 figures per month is perfectly achievable based on what I was able to do last year.

It is also my goal to not purchase any more miniatures in the next two months!

  Quarter 3 This blog post is technically for the months of July to September, but as it turned out, I did absolutely zero hobby time in July and August. Summer is just not the time to be indoors painting and wargaming. On top of that, we did a lot of travelling this summer, making it even harder to find hobby time! So all of the painting you will see in this post was done in September. 2024 Wrap Up Post

So the year is over, and it is time to check in on the goals I had! Goal #1: Paint Miniatures Starting with my goal of painting, let's first take a look at the miniatures I painted in the final 3 months of 2024! I started with painting more of the Stranger Things models. Dustin, Mike, Lucas: Hopper, Joyce: I also painted some terrain for Don't Look Back, but this does not count towards my painting goals: I then painted a Savage to use in my Ghost Archipelago crew: I then painted some Sisters of Battle that I had sitting in my pile of shame for a while: I painted some awesome retro sci-fi Galacteers for Stargrave: I then painted up some fantasy creatures. January + February 2025

The first two months of the year have passed, so it's time to report my progress on my hobby goals for the year! 1. Reduce Unpainted Miniatures I started the year by painting some of the random straggler models that I had bought for Stargrave and Frostgrave: Ghost Archipelago. These include some awesome retro sci-fi miniatures from Hydra Miniatures and Bombshell Miniatures. It also includes the remaining 3d printed miniatures from Galaad Miniatures that I had bought for Ghost Archipelago. I also painted a couple random Stormcast miniatures I had laying around! My wife painted one as well and she did so great! I also did buy some new miniatures! I bought 23 3d printing miniatures for use in The Silver Bayonet Canada. While this represents a pretty large increase in my unpainted miniatures, I was also able to sell 23 old Reaper Bones miniatures from years ago that I have no interest in ever finishing. So overall my pile of shame did not increase from this purchase! I was able to keep...
